Today is the Last Day of this Month RIGHT???

OMFG! I'm so glad this month is almost over! It has been the month from the depths of the most heinous reaches of hell! I think the world has just turned on me!!!

I can't even explain what just happened!

I was making water for tea in my tea kettle which I have used like 5000 times. Normally it starts off with a soft whistle and gets louder. This time it just started whistling like I'd left it sitting for 20 minutes or something! Really loud!

I thought it was strange, but I walked over to it and turned off the burner. Then I flipped up the little lid. You know the part that actually does the whistling. I've done this a thousand times. It's how I keep the dog from going crazy from the whistling. He hates it. But this time something bizarre happened!!! I flipped it up and scalding water exploded out in all directions. At least Nicky was in the other room!

So I'd like for the cosmic curse to lift with the end of this month please thanks very much.

Thursday Thirteen #20

13 Reasons that I wish my Stinking Internet Worked!

  1. How can I visit everyone's Thursday 13 without my internet!?
  2. How can I obsessively check to see if I got a response back from Samhain?!
  3. I need Wikipedia to fact check my writing! I don't like anachronisms! I don't! They make me crazy! Well unless they are members of SCA then that's okay!
  4. I need Dictionary.com to make sure I'm not misusing words. I have an insane fear of that.
  5. Seriously I have an email checking addiction!
  6. I miss the Luna board and Samhain Cafe!
  7. I can't check the weather once every few minutes to make sure that the sound I'm hearing is a truck and not thunder.
  8. I need to blog!
  9. I need to read other people's blogs!!!
  10. What if some huge important piece of news happens and I miss it cause I never have the TV on?
  11. I NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED MSN Messenger! *dies a little inside each minute that goes by without connection to the outside world*
  12. I don't know what I'm going to cook tonight and I can't get to allrecipes.com!
  13. I need to online shop for things I'm never going to buy!

That isn't all but I guess I should stop with 13 since I'm writing this in my "I don't really smoke, but we're going to call this my smoke break" break. \

I miss you all!!!

Triple Yuck!

Ugh, my drain in my kitchen sink is all clogged up, and I have tried EVERYTHING to unclog it. I even ran a snake like all the way to the bowels of hell and couldn't seem to find a clog. It's draining very slowly and none of the other drains in the house seem to be having any issues so I guess maybe I just didn't quite manage to shake it loose. I'll try again tomorrow when I'm not exhausted beyond belief.

Blood and Violets Cracked 100

I finished off the first 100 pages and 30k words of Blood and Violets last night. I think I'm going to be doing some major rewriting on it, because I'm struggling with some of the scenes, but then I thought that with Fiona too... Well, we'll see.

Thursday Thirteen #19

Just so y'all know, I will be visiting everyone, but I have to go to some training tomorrow so it'll be evening before I can make my rounds.

13 Reasons I Have Nothing to Wear

1. Because I'm FAT!
Yes, my friends, that is the number one reason. I have tons of adorable clothes, but they are all...well let's just say too small. I've lost twenty pounds, but I need to lose a lot more, and I seemed to be totally stalled out! Time to kick it into high gear.

2. Because I have the fashion sense of a toad stool.
No, I'm not exaggerating! I'm a t-shirt and jeans girl. If I put anything else on, I feel like I'm five playing dress up and someone is going to call me on it at any moment. Those people on What not to Wear would have a field day with me.

3. I have no money!
Seems like things keep breaking or people and dogs keep getting sick, and it all just keeps sapping any extra cash right out of the budget.

4. Because fashion is just sooo not following my desired trends.
It seems like one day everything was absolutely adorable and now you can't find anything cute! I'm hoping things shift pretty soon, because quite frankly I can't take much more of this 80s stuff.

5. Because there is nothing in stores right now I can wear, because it's too hot!
Okay, I know they put the fall clothes out now cause kids are heading back to school, but it's August and there were NO bathing suits anywhere I looked! It's the hottest time of the year, and I couldn't buy a bathing suit!

6. Did I mention I'm fat? Yeah, it bears repeating.
I'm certainly not going to spend a great deal of cash on clothes I hope won't fit in a month.

7. Because I ruin clothes.

I'm serious. I put on a new shirt, and it's like instantly tomato sauce or coffee materializes from nothing and ruins it!

8. Because I already wore the two new shirts I bought this week.
I picked up a couple of really cute shirts at Kohls last weekend for 15 bucks! Gotta love clearance. I, however, didn't take into account that I needed to dress up tomorrow so I already wore them... Doh!

9. Because I'm insane.
Yes, insane! But you all know that. Why does that keep me from having anything to wear? Well in this case, it's because I can't wear anything black anymore unless it's of a texture that camouflages fuzz. I'm serious! I can't stand fuzz or hair on my clothes. I have two dogs and a cat. Yeah, that's difficult to avoid. Strangely enough, I never notice if anyone else has fuzz or hair on their clothes unless it's pointed out to me. Another one of my little quirks...

10. Because my clothes disappear.
I'm not kidding. I think I have clothes gnomes!

11. Because sleeves aren't long enough!
Have you noticed how short sleeves have gotten progressively shorter in recent years? Even plus-sized shirts are following this trend. I mean, look, if I'm buying a plus-sized shirt chances are I have plus-sized arms! I would very much like them covered! Thanks! I'm not saying they should all be of the longer variety. Heavens no! If you've got great arms by all means you should have the length sleeve you want. Or if you don't have great arms and just like to wear them that way. That's fine too, but please Mister Fashion Designer, sir, (and I know you're a man!!!) please, just make me some shirts with sleeves of reasonable length that are not also hideously ugly so that I can get dressed and feel comfortable!

12. Because every time I do have extra cash I spend it on the Munchkin.
Awww, but he's so cute! I think he totally deserves it!

13. Because WTH happened to Old Navy???
I used to buy all my clothes there, but in recent years the price has gone up drastically, and the quality hasn't improved in the least. Plus they follow the trends in everything in the store so it's like you walk in and are transported back to the 80s!

So that's why I have nothing to wear.

Series vs. Set

Okay, I've been thinking...

A series of books is all the books an author has written that are connected, right? Or perhaps all the books that are written in one world/reality. Well the book I'm working on now, Blood and Violets, is actually loosely related to the other three books I've already written, but not nearly as closely related as those three books are to each other.

Dana of the Whispering Wood, Arianna Penndragon, and Fiona O'Sithein make up what I would consider a set within the series. I call the set The Women of Sithein, but I have no name for my series. I guess I should decide on a name, but for the life of me, I can't think of anything that would be appropriate. It's driving me to distraction!

And so my next question is can I even do this? Is it allowed? I mean, I guess anything is allowed, but I wonder if it will confuse people if I have Dana of the Whispering Woods in The Women of Sithein set from the Blah Blah Blah series. I have another set which focuses on the return of the fairies planned, and for that matter Blood and Violets could easily be part of a set since I have plans for Alex's brother, Joachim, and his father, Finn.

*throws hands up* Oh well, I'll just jump off that bridge when I come to it.

Terrifying Toddler Travel

What better way to start your Tuesday than with a little bit of alliteration, eh?

If you read my blog with any regularity, you probably know that I have a little boy just shy of two, and we're going to be visiting my in-laws next month. I'm so excited about going to visit. We haven't been back in like 5 years and haven't seen them in a year. I'm just worried about how well my little guy is going to travel. The plane ride to get there? Two hours to Atlanta and then eight to Copenhagen. I can't tell you how much fear this evokes in me.

Especially after I read these stories...

Exhibit A

Exhibit B

We're going to get thrown off the plane! I just know it! Nicky isn't the quietest child in the world. He occasionally screeches loudly and happily. We're working on that with him, but he's not quite old enough to reason with yet. It is getting better though.

So I'm trying to think of ways to keep the child happy.

1. 80 GB iPod Video complete with episodes of Wonder Pets, and Handy Manny. I'm also going to add a couple of movies that he's never seen and his favorite movie Cars. BIG thanks to my Mommy and Daddy who got this for him as an early birthday present! We got some soft headphones that I think will be good for the plane and also some of those plug in speakers for other times.

2. 10 diapers and wipes - I wonder if that will be enough diapers. Normally he wouldn't go through near that many in that time period, but who knows what will happen when we get on that airplane.

3. Juice x 4 - This is going to require some hoops to jump through, but according to TSA's website, you're allowed to take juice in reasonable amounts onto flights if you submit them for inspection. So I'm going to get some of those individual juice bottles and take them. I hope four isn't unreasonable. I'm thinking one for take off and landing of each flight to keep his little ears from popping. And of course his Cars Sippy Cup to drink it with.

4. Motion Sickness Meds - I need to call the pediatrician about this one. I have no idea what to give him if he gets sick, but for the love of all that is good and holy, can you imagine trying to deal with a motion sick child on an airplane!?

6. Peanut Butter Sandwiches x 2 - This is his absolute favorite food. I figure if he won't touch the plane food this is a sure bet so I'm taking one for each flight.

7. Crackers - Another big love of his.

8. Puffs - They are these little puffed wheat fruit flavored things that Gerber makes and he loves them. Plus they come in a great resealable container.

9. Dried fruit - He loves this one too.

10. A change of clothes - Yeah, this one is always a good plan.

11. Magic Markers/Magic Paper - These things rock my world! They are the ones that don't write anywhere but on the special paper.

12. Bard the Dragon Puppet - He is always amused by this guy.

13. His favorite cuddlers - Charlie the Bear and his stuffed Lightening McQueen.

14. Two books - Custard the Dragon and a new one.

15. A Vroom Vroom - This is how we refer to his soft cars. He's obsessed with these things!

16. Hyland's Calms Forte for Kids - This is an all herbal sleep aid for kids, as a last resort if it looks like they are going to throw us off the plane. I'm going to try it out on him before hand (if I can ever find any) because it actually does the opposite to some kids and makes them hyper. That would so not be the goal.

17. His Monkey on His Back - It's a little leash for a toddler that is shaped like a monkey looking over his shoulder. I know what you non-toddler parents are thinking... "Eh gads! She wants to put a leash on her child! How demeaning!" Well I could care less if someone thinks that about me. My son is a sprinter! He will, with absolutely no warning, take off running like a mad man. If he didn't have his monkey on, that could mean he would run in front of a car or far enough away from me that someone could grab him. This way he has the freedom to play without me having my hands on him all the time but still be safe.

18. Ergo Baby Carrier - Maybe - I'm still debating this one. We don't have one yet, and they are expensive. I know I don't want to try to schlep around a stroller that I KNOW he won't let me use anyway. He hates being in strollers. This one gives you the option of wearing him as a backpack or having him in his favorite hip position.

I'm sure I'll think of lots of other things and have to add them, but this is my list for now. Hopefully it won't get too much longer.

If anyone has traveled far with little ones and has suggestions, please! I yearn for knowledge! really!!!

Goth Larvae

Aww...I saw the cutest thing when I was at the world's largest retailer today. There was a pair of girls probably 12 or 13 decked out in goth attire. Not anything over the top. They looked pretty cute actually.

It got me to thinking. I once went to the mall with my good friend Krystal wearing a pair of black vinyl pants and a black vinyl jacket. Well I was wearing them. We both wouldn't have fit in them at the same time as they were pretty much skin tight anyway. I can't remember exactly what she was wearing. I think her black leather biker jacket and black jeans, but I barely remember what happened yesterday so I could totally be making that up. We looked pretty darn cute if I don't say so myself.

So we were wandering from store to store, and finally noticed this security guy following us around. I'm not sure if he was afraid we were going to steal something or what? I guess we did look pretty out of place in the middle of the Pine Bluff, Arkansas Mall decked out in such duds. It is also entirely possible that he was just a creepy dude who wanted to follow around teenage girls in tight black clothes!

So anyway the cute, little goth larvae totally reminded me of my goth-y youth. Ah, memories!

Quiz Me Friday #2: What type of Writer Should You Be?

You Should Be a Science Fiction Writer

Your ideas are very strange, and people often wonder what planet you're from.

And while you may have some problems being "normal," you'll have no problems writing sci-fi.

Whether it's epic films, important novels, or vivid comics...

Your own little universe could leave an important mark on the world!

What Type of Writer Should You Be?

Hmmm...While I enjoy a good sci-fi book, I haven't done a great deal of Sci-Fi writing. Unless you consider paranormal sci-fi...then I have, but I don't think it quite falls in that category

I just put the route I took every day to go to my Danish language classes. It was 9 miles both ways. No wonder I was so skinny!!!

I'm really going to have to start riding my bike again. Whew of course Denmark is much flatter than Northwest Arkansas.

Thursday Thirteen #18

13 of my Favorite Quotes from Fiona O'Sithein

I'm too darn sleepy to be creative tonight so I'm drawing on my ready-made list. Not to be confused with the one I did about the first lines of the chapters in Fiona. Those weren't nearly my favorites.

Is it narcissistic to have favorite quotes that you wrote yourself? When I'm giggling my head off at something I wrote, my husband always looks at me kinda funny. Oh, well if it is, then here is me reveling in narcissism. :-D May you enjoy them as much as I do.

1.
Fiona: “What? You think just because I don’t have any magic like my brother or super strength like you people that I’m useless?”

2.
Bonnie: “He’s not a heretic, is he?”
Fiona: “Isn’t everyone these days?”

3.
Fiona: “No one wants to be the one to deflower the king’s daughter.”

4.
Fiona: “Yes, Beltran, you’re a vampire. How could anyone forget it when you’re reminding them of it ten times a day? You are the only vampire I know who seems to obsess about it so much.”

5.
Fiona: “I’m not laughing at you, Beltran, but it’s just amusing that a vampire who thinks he’s damned is trying to convert me to Christianity.”

6.
Dana (who has visions): “If I had seen your death, I would have you knocked out and strapped to my back by now, so I could take you home to Sithein myself!”

7.
She absolutely refused to cry in front of them. She was supposed to look like a regal dragon princess not a whiney, sobbing girl.

8.
Fiona to her mother: “Daddy says he’s sorry for being a jerk.”

9.
Fiona: “Oh, Daddy, let’s not throw stones. We all know you had Mama barefoot and pregnant before you even thought about marrying her.”

10.
Beltran: “We were being followed, but I never expected them to knock.”

11.
Dana: “What you don’t seem to have grasped about Fiona is that regardless of what you say or do, she does exactly what she wants to, even if it’s not the wisest of choices.”

12.
Fiona: “Don’t look at me like that! Just because I’m a girl doesn’t mean I can’t kick your ass too.”

13.
Tarran: “I believe I’ve been a good man and will go to heaven when I die, but even paradise without Wyn would be hell.”

The Chap Stick Incident

Once upon a time, I was taking a creative writing class with Lisha. We always had a blast. Our teacher was a grad student named Adam Prince. Yup, A. Prince. I always thought that was pretty adorable.

Well you know how creative writing classes work. Everyone sits around a big table, and you give your commentary on other people's work. I believe it was during one of these workshop sessions that the events in question took place.

It was Halloween or at least the last class day before Halloween. At any rate we were in costume, which I had completely forgotten and Lisha had to remind me of. Lishy and I had on matching robe dresses. Hers was burgundy and mine was black. I've still got them around here somewhere. Hers was complimented by a lovely set of sexy, little elf ears and a matching burgundy cape transforming her into just about the hottest elf ever! I had on a black witches hat with feathers and my black velvet cape with burgundy satin lining. We were adorable! Let me tell you!

We were sitting there discussing someone's story, and Lisha starts looking for something in her backpack. Well she pulls a couple things out and lays them on the table. One of them is what appears to be a tube of chap stick. Now my lips are perpetually chapped, and we always borrow each others stuff, so I didn't think a thing about picking it up and putting some on.

The second it touched my lips they started burning, and I looked over at elven Lisha. Her eyes were big as moons, and she was staring at me. Then she started to giggle and somehow managed to get out between gasping guffaws, "It's...not...chap...stick!!!" At this point I remembered that she also had a tube of that stick perfume stuff in her purse and realized the error of my ways.

Her laughing fit set me off and pretty soon the elf and witch were both laughing hysterically and no one around us had the slightest idea what was so funny. Poor Adam, knowing that we were slightly off our rockers anyway, stared at us in horror as if we might at any moment go completely insane and he'd have to deal with it. Poor guy for having to put up with us.

Well, Lisha again stammered out something about it not being chap stick. Of course, he had no idea what we were talking about. Seeing as she couldn't stop laughing, Lisha tried to make a break for it to avoid further giggling interruption, but only managed to elevate the situation. She made it around to the head of the table near the door before she had a giggle-induced leg collapse and ended up sitting on the floor laughing her head off at the head of the table. Of course the sight of an elf sprawled out on the floor giggling madly only served to make my laughing fit all the worse.

Our classmates were all staring at us in confusion while we both laughed our heads off. You see when Lisha and I get together hilarity tends to ensue. I can't tell you the number of times we've been told, "You girls are having way too much fun." Well, yes, thank you! Yes, we are. Y'all are just jealous. :-D

Lost and Found: Missing Muse

I think my muse must have taken a vacation. Probably somewhere with a beach. *grumbles jealously* I have absolutely no creativity. Maybe my WIP is in a funk and I need to take a look at it from another angle or something. I'll have to try that. Perhaps I'll skip forward to some juicy bits. At any rate, I need something to get me inspired.

And chocolate...Dang it! I neeeeeeeeeeeeed some chocolate! I've banned it from the house. Now that doesn't mean I won't eat it. The same rules apply to it that apply to the diet coke. I am allowed to have it if I want it but it can't be easily obtained, which means it can't be in my house. I was seriously contemplating seeing if I had everything I needed to make fudge though earlier. I think I do...*Stares longingly at the kitchen*

Also I would like to put in an order for some decent luck. Mine has been pure and utter crap recently, and I'm tired of it! I need something good to happen!!! And nothing else bad!

Think this order will go through? We'll see...

13 Reasons to Buy a Raffle Ticket

Welcome to my first attempt at blatant fund raising!

  1. You could win a Vespa LX50 scooter.

  2. You'd be supporting a great cause. All proceeds of the raffle go to benefit Gifford Memorial Hospital end-of-life care services.

  3. Because wouldn't you look hot on a scooter!? Scooters get between 60 and 80 MPG.
My Honda Metropolitan gets 100 MPG so this one might even get more. How much was gas last time you filled up?

  4. You have a 1 in 250 chance to win! That's pretty darn good odds if you ask me.

  5. You'd be saving the environment for our kids.

  7. Come on! Even fairies ride scooters! Don't you wanna be like a mythical creature?

  8. You can name your scooter something cute. Like Blue Belle…

  9. It's good for your karma to donate to worthy causes. Don't you need some good karma? Everyone does!

  10. All the cool kids are doing it.

Wish me luck...

I'm going to attempt something that has never been tried before. At least by me! I'm going to attempt to go an entire month without Diet Coke. Now you may think, meh, who cares! Who needs Diet Coke anyway? Well the answer would be ME!!! It's a serious, serious addiction, people! I neeeed it! So I'm going to go for it.

I've got some in my fridge that I'll have to finish off of course, but then after that it's cold turkey! I'm not going to have buy anymore between now and the time we travel to Denmark. Maybe I'll allow myself the occasional 20 oz at work when I am on the verge of falling asleep, but other than that NO!

One of those days...

You ever have those days when you're just not equipped to deal? I'm having one of those days. Nicky is in a horrible mood. I mean not just a little horrible, but screeching fits of doom horrible. For no apparent reason!!! He asks for something. I get it for him. He continues to scream.

My husband is sick with some sinus thing which I'm relatively certain I'm getting too. Of course that means Nicky likely will get it too and I swear one more thing might just make me cry!!!

My First Step to Being a Gearhead

I'm so gonna buy this! I have always wanted to buy an old junker and rebuild it, so I'm starting with this. I'm going to build my own working model engine. I figure I can learn the in's and out's of ho an engine runs if I can put this thing together.

I can't wait!

Thursday Thirteen #16

This week has been an absolute freaking nightmare! If weeks had a delete key, I'd totally click that sucker!!! So as an attempt to bring things into perspective, I'm going to list...

13 Things That Didn't Suck About This Week

1. No one I love is dead or mortally wounded.

Well, no one who hasn't been dead for some time at least.

2. The project at work that has been tormenting me was completed today!

Yay! We've been working on that thing for weeks, and it's about made me ready to pull my hair out. I was beginning to seriously consider just crawling in a hole and giving up.

3. Nicky and I made a craft together!!!

Check it out! That was a lot of fun! He's so cute!

4. Nicky got his passport.

I was really beginning to get concerned that it might not get here in time what with all the articles I keep reading about how backed up the passport offices are, but it's here, and I don't have to worry about it anymore! Yay!

5. We got a better flight.

Delta called me today and told me that one of our flights for September got changed which will make us miss another flight. The man was very apologetic. I guess he gets yelled at alot or something. I told him not to worry about it, and he actually thanked me. So anyway, this was going to put us in the airport in Atlanta for six hours! I almost cried! Six hours in an airport with an angry probably tired baby! That would not be my idea of pleasant afternoon. He found me a flight the next day that doesn't have any crazy lay overs and is actually minus one of the connecting fights. Yay! So we don't have to fly through Charles de Gaulle in Paris, and that airport is the suck so I'm all about missing out on that. Charles de Gaulle without the benefit of Paris? What's the point? Delta's customer service is spectacular! I highly recommend them if you're flying anywhere.

6. Today is Thursday.

Which is the day before Friday! I think you catch my drift.

7. I didn't lose my camera.

I thought for a good hour today that I might have lost my camera, but apparently I'd only hidden it from myself. Bryon found it for me.

8. I actually managed to write a post for Girlbike.com.

It took some poking and prodding by Crystal, but I did manage to do it. :-D I promise I'll be better! hehe

9. I got to ride my scooter!

Granted it was only to the store and back, but at least that's something. I really must ride it more! It was giving me fits to get it started.

Okay, I'm struggling here to think of anything else that didn't suck!

10. There is only today and Friday before Saturday!

11. I ate a Cadbury chocolate bar.

It was good. That didn't suck.

12. I dropped my Axim today, and it didn't break!

Thank goodness for that, I might have fallen apart.

13. It's almost over!!!

Okay, I'm going to go write for like the first time this week. Well I'm going to attempt to write at least. We'll see what happens.

Our 1st Craft Project!!!

Look! Look! Look! Nicky and I just completed our 1st joint craft project!!!

I had embroidered this pillow about five years ago, and yesterday I found it and was suddenly possessed with the need to complete it. So I sewed it together and added the fringe and then realized I didn't have any stuffing.

Nicky was sitting on my lap about half the time when I was sewing it up. He is fascinated by the sewing machine. A little too fascinated! I worry he'll stick his little fingers in it, so he had to spend most of the time I was working on it on Daddy's lap.

I bought some stuffing today at the world's largest retailer, and Nicky helped me stuff the pillow. It was so much fun, and he had an absolute blast. Apparently stuffing for pillows makes excellent projectiles... Heck at least its one thing that doesn't take anyone's eye out or cause a concussion!

Isn't it lovely!!! That's all hand embroidery folks. Look at that craftsmanship! Just try not to look at the stains. I believe I got them on there when I was originally embroidering it. I have no idea what it was, but if I had to wager a guess I'd say Diet Coke. Seems like most of my stains are Diet Coke related.
